About the Job

Under general supervision, the Drywall Laborer is be responsible for hanging drywall, mudding and taping, metal stud framing, and application of texture/wall finishes. The Drywall Laborer also completes portions of all phases of construction as needed and directed by Superintendents, Lead Carpenters, and/or Project Managers, cleans and prepares sites, operates a variety of hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks, cleans up rubble and debris, and removes waste materials. The Drywall Laborer may also pick up and distribute tools and materials to various job sites.

Day to Day Responsibilities

  • Performs heavy physical labor.
  • Trims rough edges from wallboard to maintain even joints, using a knife.
  • Fits and fastens wallboard or sheetrock into specified position, using hand tools, portable power tools, and/or adhesive.
  • Measures and marks cutting lines on framing, drywall, and trim, using tape measure, straightedge or square and marking devices.
  • Assembles and installs metal framing. May perform wood framing as well.
  • Reads blueprints and other specifications to determine method of installation, work procedures, and material and tool requirements.
  • Cuts metal framing to size using cutting tools.
  • Prepares walls for painting by mudding, taping or finishing joints, smoothing out imperfections, and applying texture/finish over walls.
  • Assists in building structures for commercial and residential construction sites using hand tools and power tools.
  • Participates in demolitions.
  • Erects concrete forms and scaffolding.
  • Mops, brushes, or spreads paints, cleaning solutions or other compounds over surfaces to clean them or to provide protection.
  • Applies caulking compounds by hand or using caulking guns.
  • Erects and disassembles scaffolding, braces, barricades, ramps, and other temporary structures.
  • Provides assistance to subcontractors as needed.
  • Maintains a clean job site: picks up all tools and equipment and secures job site each day in order to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Loads, unloads, and identifies building materials, machinery, and tools, and distributes them to the appropriate locations.
  • Cleans and prepares construction sites to eliminate possible hazards. Hauls materials to dump or recycle as appropriate.
  • Related duties may be assigned as necessary.


Qualifications

  • Language Skills: Ability to understand verbal and written instructions and technical procedures. Must be able to communicate verbally and in writing with coworkers and supervisors.
  • Mathematical Skills: Ability to perform basic math including adding, subtracting, dividing, and multiplying and use these operations with money and units of measurement such as inch, foot, yard, ounce, and pound (or their metric counterparts).
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed instructions and to deal with problems involving a few variables.
  • Education and Experience: High School Diploma and a minimum of 3 years related experience or equivalent. Some knowledge of proper use of equipment, materials and supplies used in commercial and residential construction. Some knowledge of applicable safety precautions.
  • Certificates and Licenses: Valid driver’s license and current vehicle insurance required. Proof of CPR and First Aid Certification required.
